Easy Reply blog

Your cold email open rate is fine. Your reply rate isn’t.

Open rate and reply rate measure different things. If prospects open and still don’t answer, the problem is usually the ask — not your subject line.

An open means someone looked. A reply means they decided it was worth answering.

Those are not the same job. Treating them like one number is how you keep optimizing subject lines while the body asks for a meeting, a calendar link, and three minutes of typing.

What an open actually tells you

An open says the message landed somewhere readable. It does not say:

  • the person understood the email
  • the ask was fair
  • they had a one-click way to answer
  • they will ever write back

If opens look healthy and replies are flat, stop rewriting the subject. The failure is usually after the open.

The quiet gap after the open

Replying costs more than ignoring you. They have to decide what to say, find a polite sentence, and hit send. Your open rate does not remove any of that.

Common post-open blockers:

  • The ask is a meeting on email one
  • The CTA is vague
  • There is no honest no or not now
  • The email is long enough that answering feels like a project
  • The only path is a form, scheduler, or blank reply box

Opens measure attention. Replies measure whether you made answering cheaper than silence.

How to measure without lying to yourself

Track opens and replies separately. Then track positive replies and booked meetings separately from that.

A higher open rate with the same reply rate is not progress. A lower open rate with more honest answers in-thread might be.

Do not promise yourself a higher reply rate from tooling alone. What you can change is friction after the open: fewer words to write, fewer tabs to open, a clear choice sitting in the email.

A practical next email

Write under ~80 words. Name one specific pain. End with a binary or three-option ask they can answer in a second. Include a real no. If you send from Gmail on desktop Chrome, Easy Reply can put 2–4 reply buttons inside that email so the prospect taps instead of typing. Free includes 10 sends a month. Recipients do not install anything. Opens got them in the door. The reply only happens if answering is easier than closing the tab.

Send fewer “just checking in” emails.

Give your next prospect a question they can answer without typing. Add 2–4 reply options inside Gmail.
